How we met: A friend asked Reece if he'd "heard what Jess is working on?"

Propeller theme: Ocean Carbon

Propeller investment stage: Seed

Cofounders Jess Adkins and Will Berelson are both professors at Caltech and USC respectively where they've spent decades studying marine geochemistry. Together with cofounder and engineer Pierre Forin, they've built a system for onboard carbon capture and storage at sea for the maritime sector, enabling avoided emissions and safe, permanent storage of CO2. Calcarea is also supported by Azolla, Grantham Neglected Climate Opportunities Fund, and Caltech.

  • Why we love the founders – We first met Jess and we loved his absolute expertise in his field combined with his sense of urgency to act -- to build a business to address the most pressing problem of our time. Pierre, Will and team all share this blend of intelligence and commitment.
  • What’s novel about Calcarea – There are other approaches to point source carbon capture, but Calcarea's ability to capture AND store CO2 at sea is truly novel.
  • Why we’re excited about this market – In addition to the growing carbon market, the shipping sector is a fascinating partner here with the urgent need to decarbonize as regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
  • How impactful Calcarea could be – Calcarea has gigaton scale potential. Full stop.
