Coastal Assembly harnesses the power of nature to protect and rebuild coastlines

Location: Boston

How we met: Through our local network

Propeller theme: Ocean Industrials

Propeller investment stage: Seed

The ocean moves massive amounts of sand and sediment around every day. Coastal communities spend hundreds of billions of dollars each year trying to keep sand where they need it – to keep a beach for recreation, to protect coastal homes and businesses, to keep critical infrastructure protected. Enter climate change, and its compounding effects, and that price tag for sand and sediment transport are about to explode. Coastal Assembly, built on a decade of work at MIT’s Self Assembly Lab, seeks to use an AI-powered data engine and strategic coastal interventions to prevent and restore damage to coastlines everywhere.

  • Why we love the founders – Skylar Tibbits, Walt Zesk and Sarah Dole share reps, vision, complimentary skills and massive ambition.
  • What’s novel about Coastal Assembly’s tech – Coastal Assembly works with nature, not against it or in response to it. They merge data insights with custom installations to provide a bespoke prescription to thousands of unique global headaches.
  • Why we’re excited about this market – this is a huge, diffuse market - that has never really been addressed with a comprehensive, scalable solution that takes a decadal, rather than annual approach to customer success.
  • How impactful Coastal Assembly could be –  Coastal Assembly could save communities, businesses, governments billions of dollars of annual spend in addition to preserving incalculable pain and heartache from coastal damage.
