Blaze delivers fuel flexibility for maritime vessels at low cost.

Location: Denver, Colorado

How we met: Via one of the founders in our portfolio.

Propeller theme: Ocean Industrials

Propeller investment stage: Seed

Blaze is cracking the code for the next generation of maritime fuels. The company built a novel fuel-reforming technology for large maritime vessels that can reform multiple fuel types to work with existing engines, at a fraction of the cost of installing a new engine. As the maritime sector clamors for a new regime of fuels driven by regulations and price volatility, Blaze offers an elegant retrofit for assets that have long lifetimes.

  • Why we love the founders – We met Rok Sitar and Richard Barton at their pre-seed round, but passed while giving clear direction on what we’d want to see. A year later they were back, having achieved all of it and then some. They are customer-focused, always refining and simplifying their technology, and their engine never stops.
  • What’s novel about Blaze's tech –
  • There are many reforming technologies. Blaze created a simple, modular, easily-manufacturable and scalable design. They focused on fewer failure points, a design that can stack to meet different needs and can fit into automotive manufacturing processes as well. Finally, they are relentlessly focused on the technology meeting their customer’s needs.
  • Why we’re excited about this market – Maritime decarbonization is a core focus area for Propeller. What is unique for Blaze in our portfolio, and from our investments across the space is that they are agnostic to a bet on a particular fuel type. Maritime shipping is already shifting from a century-old reliance on heavy fuel oil to new fuels like LNG, Ammonia, Methanol and others. This is a market that is already multi $100B and will carve out more share over time.
  • Blaze's impact –  Blaze could be a core building block to integrating low-carbon fuels into maritime decarbonization. They will reduce the friction of adopting these low-carbon fuels and make them more performant.
