Aikido Technologies is an offshore power infrastructure company.
Location: San Francisco, CA, USA
How we met: Through our network
Propeller theme: Ocean Industrials
Propeller investment stage: Seed
Aikido is deploying GW-scale datacenters in the ocean that can be built significantly faster, more efficiently and less expensively than existing datacenter infrastructure, using floating offshore wind (FOW). FOW is the next frontier in tapping ocean resources for clean and reliable energy. Aikido aims to reduce FOW development costs and increase the throughput of projects with a novel floating wind platform.
- Why we love the founders – Sam, Bingbin, and James are all stellar engineers, unafraid of tackling hard problems and dogged in their pursuit of the best solutions. Sam and Bingbin also previously worked on FOW platform technology together at Principle Power.
- What’s novel about Aikido’s tech – Aikido's FOW platforms can be built compactly in port, then up-ended at sea. This saves space, time, and cost, while also adding efficiencies to transportation of turbines and towers.
- Why we’re excited about this market – Datacenter demand is skyrocketing, but we have limited land, and a need for cooling. Meanwhile, FOW is necessary for the global transition off of fossil fuels. Offshore wind resources are predictable and steady which makes them grid-friendly. And governments recognize that offshore wind is a domestic energy resource that supports energy security. Combined -- this is a great opportunity for a frothy beachhead to lead to a stable, long term power market.
- How impactful Aikido could be – Energy demand is increasing, and we need all the clean sources of power we can get. Offshore wind is one of our best renewable opportunities, and Aikido can unlock it here and abroad.
